Tom Brady’s Has Tennis Elbow

The following is a transcript of a conversation we had with our friend Tim about his chronic Tennis Elbow:

I always thought I had something in common with Tom Brady. Unfortunately it’s not the fact we are the same age, good looking and Irish. Both myself and Tom Brady suffer from Tennis Elbow!

I’ve had severe elbow, arm and wrist pain on and off for two years now. And it’s not from throwing winning touchdowns I can tell you that.  I’ve been working as a carpenter full time for 15 years. I also run an online business part time. Carpentry is physical work – using saws, hammers and other tools that requires intense gripping and twisting of the wrist, arm and elbow. It’s very repetitive and a great way to pick up a repetitive strain injury!

Then I would spend hours in front of the laptop typing and working on my online business. I’m not sure which made my symptoms worse. Intense nagging pain. I was barely able to lift a cup or turn on a tap when it was at its worst.

I’ve tried every painkiller, anti inflammatory and gel I can buy to help but only temporary relief. I’ve bought every elbow support and wrist support but to no avail.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow develops when the tendons on the OUTSIDE of your elbow are overloaded or damaged.(Golfer’s Elbow is the INSIDE of the elbow)

You don’t have to be an athlete to develop Tennis Elbow (but it helps!). Anyone with a physical job that has the range of motion heavily involving the elbow can be affected. We’re talking about painters and plumbers etc.

The tendons in your elbow attach the bone to the forearm muscles, right at a bony point (lump) in your elbow. It’s a pretty specific point, although pain can radiate down into your forearm and even as far as your wrist.

What To Do When You Have Tennis Elbow

The consensus from most professionals would be to stop looking for the quick fix and rehabilitate the injury. Our friend Tim needs to stop treating the symptoms and address the root cause of the problem.

In our Pain Kit, there is a treatment plan specific to tennis elbow with the necessary tools to carry out the plan! Remember… Massage, Move, Stretch and Strengthen – this will empower you and put you back on the road to recovery!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What Is The Difference Between Tennis Elbow And Golfer's Elbow?

Tennis elbow is an injury to the tendons on the inside of your elbow; Golfer’s elbow is an injury to the tendons on the outside of your elbow.

Does A Strap Work For Tennis Elbow?

A tennis elbow strap on your fore-arm will help to restrict the movement of the muscles and tendons in your injured arm. This gives your arm a chance to rest, and this helps the underlying inflammation and swelling go down. When it comes to rehab, you will still need to do the following:

  • Wear A Brace / Strap When Not Exercising
  • Heat Therapy
  • Massage
  • Movement
  • Stretch Exercises
  • Strength Exercises
  • Cold Therapy
Should I Put Ice On Tennis Elbow?

You can use a Cold Pack on your Tennis Elbow, particularly when it’s at the acute stage – ie. when it is most painful and swollen. This will help the swelling go down and relieve some of the pain. Once it has stabilised, you can then switch to warming up with a heat pack and engaging in the necessary exercises to rehab the injury.

Does A Desk Job Cause Tennis Elbow?

Typically, working at a desk job you won’t develop Tennis Elbow, so you should look elsewhere in your daily activities to see what could be causing it. If you are playing sports, going to the gym, or even assembling furniture – this can cause stress to the tendons in your arm.
